Raymond G. Mella, 84, of Cape Cod, Mass., formerly of Bristol, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005 at Bourne Manor on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. He was the son of the late Giacomo and Vincenza (Chitti) Mella. He was born Dec. 3, 1920 in Sarmato, Italy. He came to this country as an infant and attended Bristol schools. As a youth, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in England, where he visited his brother, Louis, who was wounded in action. After his service, he was trained as an airplane mechanic in Inglewood, Calif. and afterward worked for Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford testing jet engines. He was later employed at New Departure-Hyatt Division of General Motors in Bristol. He was communicant of St. Anthony Church most of his life. He is survived by a sister, Louise DiMeo of Mashpee, Mass.; a niece, Sharon Mella of Waterbury; two nephews, David Mella of Waterbury and Christopher DiMeo of Westwood, Mass.; and two grandnieces. He was predeceased by his brother, Louis Mella, and a sister, Mary Calabretta. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. from Dunn Funeral Home, 191 West St., Bristol to St. Anthony Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral Home.
