Joseph Ruwet Bunnell

Joseph Ruwet Bunnell (“Joe”), 35, of Morris died tragically on Monday while working on farm equipment. Joe was born in Torrington on January 30, 1985, the son of Helen (Ruwet) and Frederick Bunnell of Litchfield.

He grew up on the family farm in Litchfield and graduated from Litchfield High School in 2003. For the past several years he worked at Arethusa Farm. Joe had a big smile, infectious laugh, gave huge hugs, and leaves behind countless memories with his many family and friends. He was a stabilizing presence with his gentle, calming demeanor. Joe was selfless, always putting others before himself. Joe enjoyed the outdoors, whether spending time on Bantam Lake or working on the farms he loved. He loved sports and was an outstanding athlete. He played baseball for Litchfield High and more recently for the Tri-town Trojans. He also led the defensive unit for the Shepaug Co-op ice hockey team that made it to state finals in 2003.

Besides his parents he is survived by his longtime partner Brittany Houle with whom he lived in Morris; two brothers, Nicholas and his wife Sarah Lally of San Rafael, CA and Coleby of Litchfield; and a sister Kirby, of Litchfield. He also leaves his adoring niece Adeline and nephews Oliver and Ollie, several aunts, uncles and many cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents Joseph and Virginia Ruwet, and Harold and Frances Bunnell and his dogs Troy, Holly and Hershey.

A celebration of life will be held outside on Saturday at the Bunnell Farm from 1-5 PM. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 12:00 Noon in St. Peters Cemetery, Torrington.  In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in honor of Joe for an award being established for a Litchfield High School Student.  Checks can be made payable to the Joseph Ruwet Bunnell Scholarship Fund. c/o Litchfield Bank Corp. 294 West St. Litchfield, CT 06759

Hey Bunnells,
Im really sorry this happened and I pray that you find the strength and courage to endure this difficult time. As you know I played with Joe for many years and I always looked forward to seeing his long lefty swing he had. He was without a doubt the easiest going guy I ever had the privilege of playing with and was just an all around trooper in every sense of the word. My condolences go out to Nick and the entire family.

Helen and Rick - please accept my thoughts and prayers for your son. He obviously grew up to be a great man - good at everything her tried. I remember my years in Milton and driving by the farm seeing all your kids in yard. You must have been very proud of everything he accomplished. I know God has taken him into his embrace. He will live forever. I will be prayer for you both, your entire family. Be well. Chris Healy

While I did not know Joe well, as current head coach of the Spartan hockey team, I knew that he loved watching his younger brother, Coleby, play and was an enthusiastic participant in the annual Spartan hockey alumni game. The whole Spartan hockey family sends love and support to the entire Bunnell family.

I was fortunate to coach Joe during his hockey years at Shepaug. Joe was never afraid of hard work, his dominant presence, aggressive play and focus while on the ice was a major factor in Shepaugs successful run to the state hockey finals in 2003. Joe was a great team leader and led the team by example. While intense on the ice, his relaxed personality in the locker room fueled camaraderie within the team that his coaches and teammates will never forget. Most importantly Joe was a great person with a huge heart which was reflected in the way he lived his life. To know Joe is to love Joe. I am so Blessed to have known Joe for the past 20 years and proud to be his friend.
I pray the Lord comforts the whole Bunnell family.
